ABOUT US

Accessible Charlotte, aka "AccessCLT", started out as just an idea I had for a one time sensory friendly movie showing. I asked local parents of autistic children in a facebook group to join me when I rented out a private movie theater to show "Zootopia" (my son's favorite movie at the time). Having two autistic sons, I saw thought a private rental would be a great way for my kids to see their favorite film on the big screen & still be able to laugh, play, and stim without the fear of "ruining" the experience for other moviegoers. I figured since I was going to rent the space regardless, other parents/ kids could join in on the fun. The turnout and positive commentary I received was overwhelming. More people than I expected showed up, but we had room for them all! Everyone was so excited to be there, and for many, it was their child's first movie theater experience as well. I realized that there was a huge need for a judgement free environment for families with disabled members to congregate in Charlotte.
AccessCLT is an opportunity for my family and I to pour into our local community, specifically for families affected by disabilities in any capacity. Whether you're disabled, a caregiver, a parent, or just someone who wants to contribute, I hope to offer a way for you to interact in a positive way in Charlotte in the coming years. I believe that community is the anecdote to loneliness, and that we can all do our part to contribute to a more accessible and welcoming Charlotte.
